Robert E. Moreland attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1986. Mr. Moreland remained at the University of North Carolina to complete his Juris Doctor degree in 1989.
Following law school, Mr. Moreland defended physicians, hospitals, nursing homes, nurses, and other health care providers in medical negligence claims as an associate and principal in the law firm of Heilig, McKenry, Fraim & Lollar. In February of 2003, he and John A. Heilig established The Heilig Firm, PC. This firm’s mission is to provide injured parties experienced and skilled legal representation in all aspects of personal injury law, including suits filed for medical and nursing malpractice, nursing home neglect, damage caused by defective products, premises liability, and motor vehicle accidents. In the last six years, the firm has negotiated substantial settlements for its clients, and is now litigating scores of lawsuits in courts throughout southeastern Virginia and North Carolina.
For his part, Mr. Moreland has earned a reputation among his peers as a skilled and successful trial lawyer. His training and work, particularly in the medical malpractice arena, has allowed him to understand the medical issues at hand in each case, and to make them understandable to his clients and, more importantly, to civil juries throughout the state.
Mr. Moreland is licensed by the Virginia and North Carolina State Bars. He is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Eastern and Middle Districts of North Carolina, as well as the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is a member of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association.
Since becoming licensed in 1989, Mr. Moreland has lectured extensively to physicians, nurses, lawyers, and administrators in Virginia regarding issues of medical and nursing malpractice. He and Mr. Heilig concentrate exclusively on matters involving traumatic injury and death.
Importantly, The Heilig Firm, PC, regularly accepts referrals from well-respected lawyers and health care providers in the community who rely upon Mr. Heilig and Mr. Moreland to evaluate and, if meritorious, prosecute personal injury claims. Simply put, other professionals in the community would not refer these cases unless they were sure that The Heilig Firm, PC, would handle them aggressively and efficiently.
